KPFK Radio has been broadcasting in Los Angeles since 1959. It is owned and operated by the non-profit Pacifica Foundation, and is the second to go on the air of five Pacifica stations in the United States. Founded by World War II-era conscientious objectors, Pacifica took on a mission of, among other things, educational broadcasting of accurate, objective and comprehensive news on matters vitally affecting the listening community. It further seeks, through broadcast operations, to pursue building international and intercultural understandings; to disseminate information on the causes of conflict between nations, races, creeds and colors; and promoting the study of political and economic problems and of the causes of religious, philosophical and racial antagonisms. The Foundation has also taken upon itself the objective of encouraging and providing outlets for the creative skills and energies of the community, to serve the cultural welfare of the community.
KPFK is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast using a transmitter powered at 110,000 watts. This and the transmitter's location on Mount Wilson in the San Gabriel Mountains gives the KPFK signal tremendous potential reach. However, KPFK has had to operate the transmitter at reduced power in recent times. In order to restore it to full operating capacity, some crucial replacement parts need to be purchased and installed. Your donation here will help KPFK's signal regain its full strength.
KPFK may be tuned in at 90.7 FM in Los Angeles; 98.7 FM in Santa Barbara; 93.7 FM in San Diego; 99.5 in Ridgecrest / China Lake, and online at KPFK.ORG.
